“Studio Photo”: Omaggio ai fotografi in Mali“Studio Photo”: A tribute to Mali photographers

La fotografia in Africa già da diversi anni è diventata oggetto di attenzione da parte dei critici e degli appassionati di fotografia in tutto il mondo.

Le immagini di Malick Sidibè, Seydou Keita dal Mali, i sudafricani Pieter Hugo e Lien Botha, Nji Obodai del Ghana e di numerosi altri fotografi ormai sono frequentemente esposte in festival e gallerie di tutto il mondo.

A parte i grandi nomi sopraccitati, il Mali in particolare ricopre un ruolo importante a livello internazionale, come dimostrano i Rencontres di Bamako, giunti alla loro 9° edizione e punto di riferimento per la fotografia africana, e la produzione di nuovi fotografi come la giovane Fatoumata Diabate e Amadou Keita.

In Mali la fotografia è però diffusa in maniera capillare su tutto il suo territorio. Molti infatti sono gli Studio Photo dove tanti giovani fotografi professionisti, uomini e donne, seguono le orme dei loro illustri predecessori, interpretando la vita degli abitanti del Mali e cogliendo anche gli aspetti sociali e umani del paese.

Le immagini mostrano i fotografi come fossero clienti del loro studio, i clienti che solitamente vanno per farsi ritrarre in occasione di importanti cerimonie come battesimi e matrimoni o semplicemente per usare le foto per documenti.

Il lavoro intende rendere omaggio a questi fotografi che operano in condizioni spesso difficili, spesso in città lontane dalla capitale, come Timbouctou o Djennè, e che aspettano anche fino a quindici giorni per vedere il risultato del loro lavoro. Molti fotografano con vecchi apparecchi analogici, o argentique come dicono loro, alcuni con piccole compatte digitali per svincolarsi dai problemi dei lontani laboratori.

Un omaggio per riconoscere all’Africa, e al Mali in particolare, la propria identità culturale, la propria visione del mondo attraverso l’obiettivo di un’appareil photo.

Mali Studio Photographers

Photography, in Africa, has – already years ago – become the subject of attention of critics and photography enthusiasts worldwide.

The images of Malick Sidibé, Seydou Keita from Mali, South African Pieter Hugo and Lien Botha, Nji Obodai of Ghana and many other photographers have been frequently exhibited in festivals and galleries around the world.

Apart from the aforementioned big names, Mali in particular plays an important role internationally, as demonstrated by the “Rencontres in Bamako“, that reached their 9th edition and a reference point for African photography, and production of new photographers as the young Fatoumata Diabate and Amadou Keita.

In Mali, however, photography is widespread in a capillary fashion throughout its territory. Many – indeed – are the Photo Studios where many young photographers, men and women, follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, interpreting the lives of the people of Mali and also taking advantage of social and human aspects of the country.

These images show the photographers as if they were customers of their studos, customers who usually ask to be photographed at important ceremonies such as baptisms and weddings or simply to use the photos for documents.

It’s a tribute to these photographers who work often in difficult conditions, often distant from the capital city, as Timbouctou or Djenne, and waiting for up to fifteen days to see the result of their work. Many photograph with old analog sets, or argentique as they say, some with small digital compact camera to disengage from the problems of distant laboratories.

A tribute to  Africa, and Mali in particular, their cultural identity, its vision of the world through the lens of un’appareil photo.
