Nello spirito della nostra propensione a raccontare storie locali sottovalutate o ignorate, Ilker ci segnala una sua recente indagine. Qualche anno fa si è reso conto che la lebbra non era ancora del tutto sparita in Turchia e che, anzi, esisteva un ospedale sconosciuto ai più. Quella che presentiamo oggi è solo una piccola selezione del suo lavoro ma è sufficiente ad interrogarci su quanto ne sappiamo davvero anche noi…. Antonio Amendola]

Patients were mostly from the south east and eastern Turkey whose families were of low income. I decided to embark on this project after reading an article in a national newspaper at the end of 2005. It was the first time I was aware that there was leprosy in Turkey and it made me question public awareness to this condition.

I began by reading about leprosy, and wanted to focus on the faith and healing process of these patients. Initially I was nervous of how I could approach this issue, but after researching the disease and spending time with the hospital staff I took a personal bold step to understand these people’s lives.

Leprosy or Hansen’s disease (HD), is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Leprosy is primarily a granulomatous disease of the peripheral nerves and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract; skin lesions are the primary external symptom. Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.

Ho scattato queste foto presso l’ospedale di Bakirkoy lebbra nel marzo 2006.
I pazienti erano per lo più provenienti dal sud est ed est della Turchia, ed appartenevano a famiglie a basso reddito.

Ho deciso di intraprendere questo progetto dopo aver letto un articolo su un quotidiano nazionale, alla fine del 2005.

Per la prima volta che mi rendevo conto che c’era la lebbra in Turchia e mi sono chiesto se l’opinione pubblica ne fosse consapevole….

Ho iniziato a leggere sulla lebbra, e ho voluto concentrarmi sul processo di fede e di guarigione di questi pazienti. Inizialmente ero nervoso e dubbioso su come avrei potuto affrontare il tema, ma dopo aver studiato e passato parecchio tempo con il personale dell’Ospedale, ho deciso di farmi avanti con i pazienti.

La lebbra o morbo di Hansen (HD), è una malattia cronica causata dal batterio Mycobacterium leprae e lepromatosis Mycobacterium; è principalmente una malattia granulomatosa del sistema nervoso periferico e la mucosa delle vie respiratorie superiori, le lesioni cutanee sono il sintomo primario esterno. Se non curata, la lebbra può degenerare progressivamente causando danni permanenti alla pelle, nervi, arti ed occhi.
