Per una rieducazione attraverso la visione

Tutti i Lunedì pomeriggio di un intero anno (era il 2012), con Fabio Mantovani, fotografo professionista, ho tenuto un corso presso la Comunità Ministeriale del Carcere Minorile del Pratello di Bologna. In questa struttura, dopo aver commesso un reato, i ragazzi stazionano per non più di due mesi in attesa di giudizio. “Lenti correttive. Per una rieducazione attraverso la visione” è il libro che racconta quei lunedì, ma anche molti altri giorni nei quali noi non eravamo presenti e i ragazzi ospitati si fotografavano da soli.

“Lenti correttive” è un racconto visivo in cui vale la regola dell’auto-narrazione. Poche indicazioni tecniche e alcuni consigli stilistici sono stati gli unici elementi che abbiamo fornito ai ragazzi durante il periodo trascorso assieme. Abbiamo desiderato che fosse la loro soggettività, la loro visione a prendere piede e non quella di persone che hanno sfiorato la loro vita solo in maniera tangenziale.

L’urgenza di scattare, caratterizzata dalla frenesia tipica dell’adolescenza, ha avuto sempre la meglio sugli aspetti teorici del corso. Ne consegue che le foto che vedrete sono spesso imperfette: a volte leggermente fuori fuoco, a volte sottoesposte, a volte mosse ma è proprio nell’imperfezione che si trova la loro veridicità. “Non un’immagine giusta, ma giusto un’immagine”, diceva Godard alludendo alla capacità evocativa che qualsiasi frammento di realtà può contenere.

L’età degli ospiti della Comunità ha imposto che venisse rispettato un certo grado di privacy e che i ragazzi non risultassero riconoscibili. Quello che in apparenza poteva risultare un limite è diventato, in realtà, la cifra stilistica del nostro lavoro. I volti non appaiano mai nella loro interezza: se c’è un focus sullo sguardo, non vengono mai mostrati entrambi gli occhi; se nell’inquadratura compare tutto il volto, la penombra è complice nel nasconderne una parte.

“Lenti correttive” è una narrazione “da dentro” in cui i soggetti sono delineati per brevi tratti suggerendo al lettore/osservatore una possibile traccia che si va a completare liberamente nella sua immaginazione. Queste figure sfumate che si raccontano con spavalda incertezza, accennano solo qualcosa di loro e del loro vissuto, lasciando  molto spazio a tutto ciò che non si vede, a tutto ciò che nelle loro vite si deve ancora comporre. E’ come se proprio nella parte celata della foto si nascondesse quello che in potenza può accadere. E ci piace così. Ci piace non associare in maniera smaccata e definitiva i loro volti alla struttura in cui sono ospitati. Ci piace che i loro visi vengano delineati solo in maniera sommaria e veloce, come veloce e non definitivo è il loro stato all’interno della Comunità Ministeriale del Centro di Giustizia Minorile. La parte che non si vede è, in fondo, lo spazio del silenzio dove la parola non ancora detta attende e risuona.

For one year Fabio Mantovani, a professional photographer, and I spent Monday afternoon as volunteers in the Ministerial Community of Pratello Juvenile Prison in Bologna taking a photography course for young guests. The book “Lenti correttive. Per una rieducazione attraverso la visione” tells those Mondays, but also many other days, when we were not present and the boys photographed by themselves alone.
“Lenti corretive” is a visual narrative book composed of the pictures that the boys have taken in an attempt to tell their stories to themselves and to others.

” Lenti correttive” is a book in which the rule is self-narration. We gave to the boys only few techinical and stylistic guidance during the time spent together. We wanted to show their subjectivity, not the vision of people who have touched their life only tangentially.

The hurry to shoot, characterized by the typical adolescent franzy, has always taken precedence on the theoretical aspects of the course. It follows that the photos you will see are often imperfect: sometimes out of focus, sometimes underexposed, but the truth is in their own imperfection.

“It’s not a right picture, but just a picture”, said Godard alluding to the evocative capacity of any reality’s fragment.

The guests’ age of the Community has imposed to observe a certain degree of privacy: the boys didn’t have to be recognizable. What apparently could be a limitation has become, instead, the stylistic feature of our work. The faces never appear totally: if there is a focus on the look, both eyes are never displayed, and if all the face appears in the frame, the penumbra hides a part.

” Lenti correttive” is a narrative “from the inside” in which subjects are quickly outlined, suggesting to the reader/observer a possible track that is going to complete in his imagination freely. These figures tell something about themselves with cocky uncertainty.  They suggest something about their lifes and their experience, leaving space for all that is not visible. In the dark side of the picture there is what can happen. And we like it that way. We do not like to associate pemanently their faces to the structure in which they are housed. We love that their faces are outlined in a summary and fast manner, as fast and not definitive is their status in the Ministerial Community of Pratello. The part that you do not see is, after all, the space of silence where the unspoken word waits and resounds.
