FREEZE tiger trade (Malaysia)

Freeze Tiger Trade Event organised by WWF Malaysia in conjunction with Malaysia Day

Last 16th September, WWF Malaysia decided to have a 4 minutes freeze and followed by a flashmob to highlight the plight of the dwindling number of tigers in Malaysia and create awareness amongst the public in Malaysia.

The freeze is to represent all the hunted / dead tigers in the wild. The public who joined randomly freeze or ‘drop dead’ to the ground for 4 minutes after which everyone will gather for a short flashmob dance.

60 years ago, there were 3000 Malayan tigers in the wild. Today, there are less than 500 tigers still roaming wildly in Peninsular Malaysia. The tigers were hunted for vanity and also medicinal purposes. Although banned by law, illegal poaching is still rampant and rapid development is threatening their very existence.

In 2010, also known as the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar, WWF Malaysia has launched a program called TX2, solely as a campaign to double the number of tigers in the wild in Malaysia and globally by 2022. Further information on how the community can support this campaign can be found at www.tx2.my
