Different faces of Hungarian Refugee Crisis

While Orbán’s Hungary spends 200 millions Euros to erect a 3.5 meters high razor-wire fence along the Serbian border (and is currently preparing to take action on the Romanian and Croatian borders as well), the burden of fulfilling the basic needs of refugees has been taken by spontaneous and organised initiatives of both Hungarian and international citizens, or local NGOs or groups such as Migration Aid, Menedék and Helsinki.
I could only describe the situation I have witnessed in the three Budapest stations as well as along the Austrian and Serbian borders as a human miracle.
The work carried out by hundreds of volunteers has been crucial in alleviating the suffering of several thousands of people transiting through Hungary and who were facing extreme conditions and hardships.
These portraits represent the two, interchangeable sides of a same coin: any of us can become a refugee, or decide to help to change the course of events.

I diversi volti della crisi dei rifugiati in Ungheria

Mentre l'Ungheria di Orban spende 200 milioni di euro per erigere una barriera di rete e filo spinato alta tre metri e mezzo che corre lungo tutto il confine con la Serbia (e si avviano i lavori anche sui fronti croato e romeno), l'onere di assicurare le condizioni minime di accoglienza è lasciato all'iniziativa di cittadini, europei e non solo, di ong e gruppi come ad esempio Migration Aid, Menedék o Helsinki.
Quello che ho visto nelle tre stazioni di Budapest e lungo i confini austriaco e serbo durante l'emergenza può essere descritto come un vero e proprio miracolo umano.
Nonostante l'estrema difficoltà della situazione, il lavoro dei volontari è stato determinante nell'alleviare le sofferenze di decine di migliaia di persone in transito attraverso l'Ungheria.
Questi ritratti rappresentano le due facce di una stessa medaglia: ognuno di noi può diventare rifugiato, oppure decidere di contribuire a cambiare il corso degli eventi.
